The Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm (Book)

About the Item

The Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm is one of the most remarkable "chinoiseries" anywhere in the North of Europe-not because of its size and the splendour of its collections, but because Queen Lovisa Ulrica's little pleasure palace, so exquisitely preserved and complete, gives a modern day visitor a genuine experience of that longing for unconstrained informality and exotic idyll, which was so poignant a sentiment of the Rococo age. Aesthetically, this exotic dream, created two hundred years ago, is balanced whole, notwithstanding its blend of purely European stylistic traits with chinoiserie, some of it Continental, some Swedish in origin, and with original objects d'art from the Far East, many of great rarity: Figurines in clay and porcelain, lacquer and metal work, textiles, curios and useful objects of widely varying character. Indeed, it is precisely this mingling of original items with more or less elegant European "Chinoiseries" that excites and arouses the curiosity of any visitor to the Pavilion today. As a result of a thorough restoration of the Pavilion's interior, begun in 1959 and concluded in August 1968, many of the numerous questions posed by the little pleasure palace's history and inventories have now been answered. Many years research, notably by this book's three main authors, have made it possible to present this comprehensive monograph on the Chinese Pavilion at Drottningholm. 327 pages. 1980 grams

  • Lynn Chadwick: the Collection at Lypiatt Park by Judith Collins (Book)
    Located in North Yorkshire, GB
Situated on the Brow of a commanding hill, Lypiatt Park, Gloucestershire, the historic manor house and grounds purchased by Lynn Chadwick in 1958, has had a distinguished history. During its long life, it has seen periods of great activity and long periods of neglect. The setting is dramatic, and geographic formations indicate that it may have been inhabited as early as prehistoric times. Chadwick made this enchanted site both his home and his studio, and it served as a stimulating backdrop for his work. He lovingly restored the house and garden. and in 1986 he bought the surrounding parkland. In the last few years of his life he dreamed of opening the grounds to the public as a sculpture park, and began to site some of his large sculptures along the grassy banks of Toadsmoor Valley. Lynn Chadwick: The collection at Lypiatt Park is an exquisite exploration of those sculptures Chadwick housed iin the gothic castle he called home until his death at the age of 88 in 2003. • Life at the Top Book by Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker
    By Anne Walker
    Located in New York, NY
Life at the Top New York’s Most Exceptional Apartment Buildings By: Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker Photographs by Michel Arnaud There’s a parlor game that sophisticated New Yorkers have been playing since the Gilded Age: What are New York’s best apartment buildings? Before the turn of the (last) century, the Dakota and the Osborne were obvious answers; by the 1920s the list had grown to include McKim, Mead & White’s 998 Fifth, and the ultra-soigné 820 Fifth Avenue. The Roaring Twenties witnessed the construction of some of the most luxurious apartment buildings ever designed: 740 Park Avenue, the Art Deco–inspired River House, and Rosario Candela’s extraordinary 778 and 720 Park Avenue. Now, nearly 130 years after the Dakota’s cornerstone was laid, the New York skyline features numerous new palatial residential buildings, including Robert A. M. Stern’s 15 Central Park West, Richard Meier’s glass-walled Perry Street towers, and 432 Park Avenue, New York’s tallest residential building. Kirk Henckels and Anne Walker, real estate and architectural insiders, chronicle the fortunes and features of fifteen outstanding apartment houses, bringing them to life with evocative vintage photos of exterior and interior architectural details, as well photographs of chic New Yorkers at home in their elegant abodes by the likes of Beaton, Horst, and Aarons. Accompanied by Michel Arnaud’s expressive photographs and newly commissioned architectural plans, Henckels and Walker tour some of the most beautiful apartments in these buildings as they look today, designed by the talented hands of Robert Couturier, Michael S. Smith, Thomas Jayne, Katie Ridder, Markham Roberts...
