Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised a Nation is a non-fiction, historical study of the roles women played in establishing the United States as an independent nation. It is an illuminating look at the patriotic women whose tireless pursuits, on behalf of their families and their country, proved crucial to the forging of a new nation. Drawing on key primary sources, including published writings, journal entries, and personal letters, Roberts reveals the often-surprising stories of these fascinating Revolutionary-era women.
Roberts brings to life the everyday trials and extraordinary triumphs of individuals like Abigail Adams, Mercy Otis Warren, Deborah Read Franklin, Eliza Pinckney, Catherine Littlefield Green, Esther DeBerdt Reed, and Martha Washington. “[Roberts] creates a strong ... case that without the patriotism of women on the home front, the Colonies would have lost the Revolutionary War ... Founding Mothers is a series of entertaining mini-biographies and engaging vignettes”(New York Times).
Cokie Roberts (1943-2019) was a political commentator for ABC News, a senior news analyst for NPR, with prominent positions on Morning Edition, The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, World News Tonight, and This Week. In addition to broadcasting, Roberts, along with her husband, Steven V. Roberts, wrote a weekly column syndicated in newspapers across the country by United Media. She was the best-selling author of several books, including From This Day Forward, Founding Mothers, and Ladies of Liberty.
