Francisco Artigas, Amazing Large Format Book on Mexican Modern Architecture

About the Item

A hugely interesting and rare large-format book showcasing the work of Francisco Artigas (1916-1999), a self-taught Mexican architect, designer, and constructor of private urban and vacation homes as well as public buildings, hotels, and public schools during the 1950s through the 1990s. He designed about 50 private houses in "Pedregal de San Ángel" a one of a kind neighborhood created by Luis Barragán in the south of Mexico City erected from scratch on a landscape containing huge clusters of lava rock (from there the name "Pedregal") that were successfully integrated into the Mid-Century Modern architecture. Through the 186 pages of the book, the different features of this influential architect can be appreciated in large full color single and double-page photographs by Roberto Luna, along with b/w layouts of his projects. Published in 1972 with texts in English and Spanish, introductory text written by Esther McCoy, American writer, and historian on modern architecture. The book conveys in an almost hypnotic way the amazing range of Artigas' projects in different parts of Mexico, as well as the atmosphere of creativity, optimism, and cosmopolitanism of Mexican architects in that era.
