Original Tourism Posters Promoting Mexico 68 Olympic Games Bursting with Colors

About the Item

Striking original large posters printed for promoting tourism to Mexico´s 68 Olympic Games. Each poster is dedicated to a specific Mexican craft or tradition, such as "Fireworks", "Piñatas", "Ceramic doves", Textiles and flowers. The poster illustrations were commissioned to different artists, with very varied styles. The first version printed (before the graphic identity program was completed) had simply the word "MEXICO" with a Roman font, the later version portrays at the top or bottom of each -as a unifying element- the games´ logo that integrated very successfully "Mexico 68" with the five Olympic rings. They were created by a team of designers like Eduardo Terrazas, Beatriz Trueblood, José Ortiz, and Arthur Solin led by Lance Wyman and coordinated by Architect Pedro Rámirez Vázquez. We offer unframed* pieces in the large square format of 90 x 90, 90 x 89.5, and 90 x 89 cms. They have the proper credits for "Impreso en México por Miguel Galas S.A." (the officially appointed press), as well as "Comité Organizador de los XIX Juegos Olímpicos" (Organizing Comitee/Graphic Identity Program). The games of 1968 became a turning point in the way these types of events were organized, and many professionals consider its design the most appealing and effective ever. The Signal System and printed graphic material created by Wyman were so successful that his team was commissioned the design of the Signal System for the Mexico City Subway and other equally important commissions for Mexico´s infrastructure. One can clearly see in modern advertisements the great influence these marvelous 60-year designs had on designers until this day. *Framed posters in silver wood moldings are shown as samples of look and size.

After studying at the Art Students League and graduating from Brooklyn College, he moved west at the age of 26, and is credited with introducing an East Coast sensibility to marketing. He saw advertising as a means for funding his passion for the movies, and after 6 years working with a number of agencies, he finally had the funds to establish his own. All this time, he was forging ever-closer links with the film industry, and in 1954 this led to a commission from Otto Preminger to design the poster for Carmen Jones.
