About the Item

This is an American P-51D Mustang plane model signed by famous pilot Captain Charles E. Yeager. Yeager signed the plane on the wing of this plane model in black marker. The American P-51D, also called P-51D Mustang, was a single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft originally designed and produced by North American Aviation. Originally produced for the British Royal Air Force, it was adopted by the U.S. Army Air Forces. The P-51 is widely regarded as the one of the finest all-around piston-engined fighters of World War II to be produced. It had a maximum speed of about 390 MPH and a combat range of roughly 750 miles. Using a new Allison NA-73 prototype engine, the Mustang first flew in October 1940, entered production in May 1941, and began combat operations with the RAF in April 1942. Some 1,579 Allison-powered Mustangs were produced. In the meantime, the British had experimented with Mustangs fitted with the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and they discovered that the Merlin’s efficient mechanical supercharger gave the fighter outstanding high-altitude performance. North American quickly followed suit and by the summer of 1943, Merlin-powered P-51s were coming off North American’s assembly line. Merlin-powered P-51s, equipped with jettisonable drop tanks, had an operational range of more than 1,600 miles. They mounted their first long-range bomber escort missions over Germany in mid-December 1943. They quickly established ascendancy over Germany’s premier fighter planes; the P-51’s superiority was particularly evident above 20,000 feet . The P-51 could penetrate deeper into German airspace than the other U.S. fighters and was better in air-to-air combat. It thus played a large role in the defeat of the Luftwaffe. General Charles E. Yeager arrived in the European theater in November of 1943. He was assigned to the 357th fighter group and flew the P-51 Mustang in combat. By the war’s end, Yeager had distinguished himself in aerial combat over Europe and had earned ace status by downing 13 enemy warplanes, including five Me-109’s on one single mission. Yeager returned to the U.S. in 1945 to be an instructor. He qualified as a test pilot and began the trajectory that would launch him into lasting fame. On October 14th, 1947, Yeager piloted the experimental Bell X-1 on the first flight faster than the speed of sound. He reached a speed of 700 miles per hour, or Mach 1.06 at an altitude of 43,000 feet.
