Tibetan Red Lacquer Cymbal Case Lid, circa 1850

About the Item

Ornately patterned and framed with brass fittings, this box lid dates to the 19th century originally enclosed a pair of large Tibetan cymbals. Used in processions and dance performances, cymbals provided percussive backing to wind instruments and accompanied ritual chanting in temple settings. The lid is cloaked in bright red lacquer and painted in gold pigment with an abstract lotus motif and a simple meander pattern. With a fantastic aged finish, this box lid is a wonderful keepsake of the past and an unusual collector's item. Deaccessioned from the MacLean Collection of Asian Art.
