18th Century French Carved Giltwood Virgin Mary Statue with Glass Eyes on Globe
About the Item
This beautiful, antique sculpture of the Virgin Mary in prayers was created in Provence, France, circa 1780. Embellished with gold leaf and polychrome finish, the classic religious figure is beautifully ornate and has wonderful details throughout her robe, face, hair and hands; she is further embellished with glass eyes. The Madonna carving is depicted standing on a globe, with arms outstretched in wisdom and compassion and her gaze pointed downward. It represents that she is our Mother in heaven, as well as the Queen of the Earth and the entire universe. She crushes a snake under her foot. The serpent represents Satan, who attempts to tempt and harm mankind. The Virgin Mary is much more powerful than Satan, who is easily crushed beneath her foot. As referenced in the book of Genesis (3:15), "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed: he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." In Luke 10:19, it reads, "I have given you power to tread on serpents and the power of the enemy." Since Adam and Eve, the snake represents temptation and evil, while The Virgin, crushes the serpent in triumph. The religious sculpture is in excellent condition with a rich and beautiful gold leaf finish. Brass handle in the back for easy handling during church processions and veneration walks.
