About the Item
Stunning and unique, mid-19th century work of religious art.
Over the years we have sold many good quality sculptures of saints, but we have never seen or sold a top quality carved, wooden sculpture of an altar boy. The fact that this 19th century prime example is holding the church incense burner makes it even more special and desirable. The posture of this young servant, his serene facial expression, the perfect quatrefoil motifs in his collar and the quality of the details in his hands and in his robe reveil the work of a master carver. However, to us, the quality of the Gothic church censer and its chain in particular are what really makes this antique stand out from anything we ever saw. Apart from a few missing pieces from the church censer and chain, this entire sculpture could not be in better condition and it has a patina like you only find in antique European churches. If you were an altar boy once or if you know one then this unique and top quality antique sculpture could be perfect for yourself or for your friend / loved one.
