"Elizabethan Couple, " Male and Female Bronze Bookends by Jackson Co., Brooklyn

About the Item

Made by the Wm. H. Jackson Company, which -- astonishingly -- has made high-quality objects from iron, bronze and brass since 1827 in Brooklyn -- this rare pair of bronze bookends depict an elaborately costumed Elizabethan couple, expressed in stylized Art Deco terms. The beard of the male figure and the hair of the female figure are given curling, geometric form, and the male figure is framed by a high-style Art Deco fan motif. The bookends have a beautiful, old patina, and are well marked on the reverse. Today, the Jackson Company is best known for its superb, beautifully-crafted fireplace fixtures, often in brass.
