Rare Fortuny Silk Velvet in Warm French Brown, Stenciled with Pigmented Gold

About the Item

Hand dyed and stamped Fortuny silk velvet fabric in warm french brown and pigmented gold. This is a truly magnificent hand stamped velvet damask fabric. This fabric is hand made using hand dyed velvet for the base cloth and wooden blocks silk screened onto the velvet by hand using the Marianne Fortuny formula of liquid gold for the patterns. In the early 20th century, the velvet Fortuny used was a very light silk velvet that he imported from France and came in its raw state of white or slightly creamy. The whole process from raw materials to the final result depended on Fortuny. He produced the dyes, the colors, the blocks or stencils and the machines. Fortuny fabrics, famous for their subtle iridescent shimmer and delicate hand-printed motifs represent the ultimate in luxury fabrics. They are still handmade at the legendary Venice factory, using the same techniques developed by Mariano Fortuny, a century ago.
