Late 19th Century White and Indigo Caucasian Sileh Flatwoven Rug

About the Item

Silehs were woven as flatwoven covers. This Classic Caucasian example is composed of alternating indigo colored wool and cotton white ‘s’ forms against a madder red ground resulting in a highly graphic composition with a great sense of contrast. It is thought that the ‘s’ forms on pieces such as this are meant to represent dragons and evidence for this may be seen in the wispy tails and ears of the ‘s’ forms in this piece. Along with the assortment of jewel-like tones of particular interest is the red-ground of this piece. This distinctive color seems to have been achieved through over-dyeing grey wool with madder red. Collection of Dr. Harrison Stubbs.
