Seichor Kuba Runner

About the Item

Rugs, particularly long rugs and runners, with this idiosyncratic eight pointed or double-quatrefoil design have traditionally been designated Seichor in the trade and attributed to the Kuba region of the southeast Caucasus by the Caspian sea. Perhaps most characteristic of this design are the fan-shaped, rectangular, diagonal blades flanking the repeated central elements of the field. Though found almost exclusively in longer columns, the design leaves the possibility of, or perhaps implies, a larger all-over pattern. This piece is particularly well-spaced and the cross shaped areas formed by the negative spaces of the drawing particularly pleasing. Exceptional color--including blues, reds, yellow and especially green--heightens the composition and gives depth when seen in combination with the ivory ground.

Kuba rugs designated as Seichor, are known for their distinctive vibrant palette, with prominent medium blues, scarlet reds and accents in pink and gold. Stylistically, these pieces often reflect the European and particularly French taste of the late nineteenth century and this can be seen in the almost Rococo articulation of the lattice and palmettes drawn in this rug. This piece, however, is well grounded within the weaving traditions of the Caucasus. Ultimately, it is a small, highly stylized rendition of the classical Caucasian “Dragon Carpets...
