Antique Persian Sultanabad Carpet Green, Coral-Red, Light Blue, Gold and Ivory

About the Item

In 1883, Ziegler and Co., of Manchester, England, established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad, Iran, employing designers from major Western department stores, like B. Altman and Liberty of London, to modify fanciful 16th and 17th century Eastern designs for the more restrained Western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques and the best artisans from the region, Ziegler created rugs and carpets with bold, all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts. 19th century Persian Sultanabad carpets are known for their exquisite craftsmanship, bold designs, and rich history. These carpets were handwoven in the city of Sultanabad, located in western Iran, which was one of the major centers of carpet production during the 19th century. One of the distinguishing features of 19th century Persian Sultanabad carpets is their large size. These carpets were typically made in sizes that ranged from 9 feet by 12 feet to 12 feet by 18 feet, making them ideal for use in grand, formal spaces such as ballrooms, reception halls, and large drawing rooms. The designs of 19th century Persian Sultanabad carpets are typically characterized by their bold, geometric patterns and bright colors. These designs were often inspired by traditional Persian motifs, such as medallions, rosettes, and floral patterns, which were arranged in a symmetrical, repeating pattern. Another defining feature of 19th century Persian Sultanabad carpets is their high quality. These carpets were woven using the finest wool, which was spun by hand and dyed using natural, vegetable-based dyes. The wool was then woven into carpets using a symmetrical knotting technique that resulted in a dense, durable pile. In addition to their beauty and durability, 19th century Persian Sultanabad carpets also have a rich historical significance. During the late 19th century, many Sultanabad carpets were exported to Europe and America, where they became popular among affluent collectors and connoisseurs. Today, these carpets are treasured as a testament to the enduring legacy of Persian carpet weaving and remain a prized possession for collectors and interior designers alike.
