Vintage Kurdish Polychrome Wool Flat-Weave Rug

About the Item

Perdehs were used as tent dividers by the Kurdish tribes of Eastern Anatolia. Each flat-woven wool panel is individually dip-dyed and subsequently hand-stitched to the other panels. The nature of dip-dyeing confers a painterly effect, as if each panel had been colored with brushstrokes. The resulting combination of contrasting colors is another example of the modernity of tribal textile art.

    Located in Milan, IT
A very graphic tribal Kilim composed of two joined panels each containing an array of polychrome vertical stripes of various widths. The result is a wool flat-weave with a mirror image pattern having a central stripe that is considerably wider than the others. What makes this example rather unique is the richness of the individual colors, obtained from natural dyes, as well the generous width of the vertical stripes. Furthermore, the quality of the individual dyes, which include a wonderful indigo blue and a clear coral red, are indicative of an early vintage. The resulting visual effect is highly abstract and reminiscent more of Western contemporary art...
