18th century Pair of Italian Large Wood Armchairs

About the Item

18th century Pair of Italian Large Wood Armchairs Measures: cm W 83 x D 90 x H 96; seat cm H 55 x W 72 x D 70 This pair of armchairs was made in the neoclassical period, towards the end of the eighteenth century. The structure of each large armchair is similar to that of the marquise. The Marquise or Marchesa is an armchair with an enveloping back and a wide seat with a high cushion. The typology spread to France in the Louis XV and Louis XVI era, designed for the comfort of the ladies adapting to the fashion of the basket dresses. The armchairs are in finely carved gilded wood with neoclassical motifs. Geometric decorations and foliated patterns run along the uprights of the back, the armrests with volute joined with curved element to the seat and the band under the seat. The four legs with an inverted cone trunk originate from a nut-shaped element with a floral pattern carving and end with a pine cone-shaped foot. Very elegant and refined, these armchairs are particularly comfortable and suitable for any environment. They can be exhibited in pairs or individually in entrances, studios and living rooms, interspersed with sofas or drawers and consoles. Bright and decorative, they can be combined with both antique and modern furniture. In good condition of preservation, have to bear some modifications and restorations.

The pentagonal back has a wavy and curvilinear profile, and is decorated with carvings with phytomorphic and rocaille elements. The armrests, slightly moved and decorated with carved leaves, end with a volute and from this fit the seat. The band under sitting is moved and decorated with rocaille elements, as well as the legs, arched, and curly feet. On the back, a repainting of the ochre tint was done.
