Dutch Art Deco Modernist Armchair by Piet De Vries, 1934

About the Item

Unique modernist armchair by Dutch architect Piet de Vries, made especially for the boardroom of the in 1930s newly build town hall of 'Tytsjerksteradiel' in the upper north of the Netherlands (Friesland), ca. 1934. Only 12 of these chairs have ever been made. The chair has been upholstered in a nice fresh off white textured quality fabric. This chair combines very well with other modernist pieces. After almost 100 years it is still a modern design that looks great in almost any interior. The chair is in excellent condition and really comfortable to sit in. Made from solid oak with a lovely woodgrain and macassar ebony veneer on the armrests. As the others didn't have this we suspect this must have been the chairmans' chair. Piet de Vries (1897-1992) was a dutch architect who started out in Friesland but also worked in Amsterdam with the famous Gratama & Versteeg (Gratama created the term ''Amsterdam School''). Piet de Vries, also influenced by Berlage, moved more and more towards modernist design throughout his life. This early chair and other interior elements of the town hall he designed were one of his first modernist accomplishments. There is documentation about this project in which he states that it had been one of his most satisfying achievements. Last picture: The town hall designed by Piet de Vries and the 12 chairs in the boardroom. This chair is one of them! Documentation is available.
