Joaquim Tenreiro: Exceptional Pair of Jacaranda Armchairs, Brazil 1940's

About the Item

Joaquim Tenreiro (1906 - 1992) A stunning pair of armchairs of exceptional lightness and elegance, in jacaranda, by pioneer of Brazilian modernism Joaquim Tenreiro. With their slim profile and beautifully carved, curved, and indented frames, these chairs are emblematic of Tenreiro's vision for Brazilian furniture as “formally light…A lightness which has nothing to do with weight itself, but with graciousness, and the functionality of spaces." A Portuguese-born trailblazer of Brazilian design whose work paved the way for midcentury lights like Jorge Zalszupin, Sergio Rodrigues, and Lina Bo Bardi, Tenreiro was descended from generations of master woodworkers under whom he trained, and from whom he gained an elemental appreciation for material. Their legacy of craftsmanship is clearly evident in the exquisitely restrained, yet beautifully flowing carving of these armchairs. Brazil, 1942.
