Popularized by the Ancient Romans, the curule seat has long been regarded as a symbol of military and political power. Henning Kjærnulf's iconic Kurul chair is a Modern take on this Classical silhouette, with sculptural curves and clean, pared-down lines which allow the beauty of solid oak to shine through.
Henry Kjærnulf (1911-1975, known widely by his nickname, Henning) is among the exalted few designers to possess a voice so singular as to be credited with the invention of an entire design style. Propelled by fine craftsmanship and a masterful understanding of traditional carving and millwork, Kjærnulf's iconic "Scandinavian Brutalist" furniture playfully combines elements from earlier design movements - including the Arts & Crafts, Rococo, and Jacobean styles - with Modern silhouettes and a Scandinavian palette of natural woods to create a look that is both entirely unique and instantly recognizable.
