Locus Solus armchair by Gae Aulenti for Poltronova, 1964

About the Item

Locus Solus armchair designed by Gae Aulenti for Poltronova 1964. A first production in excellent condition, restored. Structure in painted metal, linen, polyurethane padding. A few years after the publication of the book by Raymond Roussel, Gae Aulenti designs this series of garden furniture for Poltronova in collaboration with the students of the art school of Pistoia. For this project, the artist is inspired by the woodwork of the Sgarsul chair, an emblem of the neoliberty style, revisiting it in a pop key and exploring the linguistic potential related to a leakage from the rigors of functionalism. He thus designed a collection that is a parody of all those furniture made of tubular in the 60’s, creating sinuous and refined shapes that touch each other within all the elements of the series. [1] The collection also appears in the 1969 film The Pool[2] directed by Jacques Deray,

  • Gae Aulenti Locus Solus daybed for Poltronova, Italy 1964
    By Poltronova, Gae Aulenti

Gae Aulenti (1927-2012) was a renowned Italian architect, famous for key cultural landmarks – the Musée d’Orsay (1980–86), the Contemporary Art Gallery at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the restoration of Palazzo Grassi in Venice (1985–86). Often straying from architecture into furniture, exhibitions, graphic and interiors, her design ethos is best understood in her own words: “Advice to whoever asks me how to make a home is to not have anything, just a few shelves for books, some pillows to sit on… to take a stand against the ephemeral, against passing trends [and] return to lasting values.” With the Locus Solus daybed...
