Pair of M1 Armchairs by Brazilian Company Branco & Preto, Midcentury, 1952

About the Item

The M1 armchair was designed in 1953 by Carlos Milan and produced by Branco & Preto, an architecture and design firm that opened in 1952 in São Paulo. Branco & Preto was one of Brazil's forerunners of interior architecture and modern furniture. This gorgeous armchair has a simple structure in solid Rosewood with comfortable upholstery composed of a seat and backrest in a single piece, so they could be placed side-by-side. The studio was managed by the architects Miguel Forte (1915-2002), Jacob Ruchti (1917-1974), Plínio Croce (1921-1984), Roberta Aflalo (1926-1992), Carlos Millan (1927-1964), and Chinese architect Chen Y Hwa. It operated for approximately ten years and marked the history of Brazilian design, becoming a reference for architects at the time – who visited the studio to learn about trends and discuss ideas. This piece is in very good original condition. The wood received a new finishing and upholstery in a gorgeous bouclè fabric.
