Set of 4 Minimalist Bauhaus Chrome-Plated Tubular Steel&Blue Leather Armchair

About the Item

This set of four armchairs was made in the 1960s. Probably German production. The geometric, bent frame is made of chrome-plated tubular steel. A simple backrest with armrests and a bucket seat is a light and simple structure. The pads of natural leather have been stretched on it. The leather has been dyed in a deep shade of navy blue and has hand stitching. The set of chairs stylistically refers to the design of the Bauhaus school, where the goal was to unite creative imagination, art and technology with practical knowledge and craftsmanship. Bauhaus teachers and students used metal in the furniture industry because, in their opinion, it perfectly met the criteria of modernity. Metal was a material that did not represent any style, it was an expression of function and structure. This set of chairs is in original vintage condition. They have traces of use related to age. The seat is at a height of 44 cm.

Thonet is the oldest existing furniture company in the world. It began its long business in 1819 when the carpenter Michael Thonet founded a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. A supporter of the Biedermeier style, he specialized in chairs, tables and cabinets characterized by clean lines, reduced ornamentation and an emphasis on the principles of functionalism. In the 1930s, Thonet's experiments with glued and steam-bent wood furniture...
