18th Century French Louis XV Carved Giltwood Canapé with Aubusson Tapestry

About the Item

This exceptional antique Louis XV sofa from the annexes of the Chateau of Versailles was crafted in France, circa 1760. The hand carved canapé stands on eight cabriole legs decorated with acanthus leaves at the shoulders, ending with escargot feet, over a scalloped apron embellished with carved floral motifs; the back and the seat are upholstered with the original 18th century Aubusson tapestry which has been restored to pristine condition. Notice the handsome colorful rooster, one of the symbols of France, in the center of the back! The banquette is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns vivid and rich colors and the original patinated gilt finish on the frame. A great addition for any large entry hall, living room or boudoir. Aubusson, a town on the river Creuse in central France, became a center of tapestry manufacturing in the 17th and 18th centuries during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. Aubusson became the source for the aristocracy, hence the typically monumental sizes of Aubusson rugs and tapestries. Employing a method known as "warping" and executed on a low horizontal loom, the weavers of Aubusson were able to create an illusion of depth in their works. Aubusson textiles are also usually identified by their stylized framing motifs and neoclassical themes. Measures: 87" W x 31" D x 47" H.
