Antique American Robert Mitchell Carved Chinoiserie Savonarola Dragon Chair 1900

About the Item

A very rare antique American carved Savanarola dragon chair, by Robert Mitchell, circa 1900. This most unusual chair by Robert Mitchell (formerly Mitchell and Rammelsberg) follows a Savanarola form of the 15th Century chairs of the Italian Renaissance and has it roots from the chairs of ancient Rome. Mitchell had created a range of ornately carved chairs in the late 19th and very early 20th century, they were generally known as "Roman chairs". Whilst this chair has that form it is decorated in the Chinoiserie taste with carved dragons, which is very rare indeed! The chair with carved ball finials and a carved backsplat with dragon and cloud form decoration, each arm is carved as a dragon with dragon's head terminals, each with a pearl of wisdom in it's mouth. The front of the seat having a carved Chinese temple lion and the chair is raised on carved claw feet. Condition is excellent, the chair is robust and stable and ready to use in your home. Bloomsbury Fine Art & Antiques ship internationally & domestically, please forward your location and we will quote a preferential shipping rate.
