Pierre Jeanneret PJ-SI-06-A Armless Chair / Mid-Century Modern Chandigarh

About the Item

This chair is a fantastic piece, finally it's iconic. It is raw in its simplicity, nothing too much but still nothing is missing. It is a chair with a very strong shape. In the big selection of Chandigarh objects it has a very specific position. It is a very sculptural pieces, in a very minimalistic way. That was very unusual at that time. It has almost a frame-structure, something like a grid. The rams on this chair are very characteristic. Its very abstract on a way more intellectual and less pragmatic way. Its somehow precise and thin, elegant and fragile. The chairs backseat is curved, so that sitting on it is comfortable. It is one of my favorite Chandigarh pieces. Provenance: Residential building, Chandigarh. Literature: Published in "CH-DSGN", Zurich in 2023; Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret, L'aventure Indienne, Ed. Gourcuff Gradenigo, 2010, p. 557; CH-DSGN, Ed. Scala, 2023. Exhibitions: This specific item was exhibited at the National Museum of the Sultanate of Oman in 2023. Authenticity: That is an authentic Mid-Century piece from Chandigarh designed by Pierre Jeanneret. Each wooden part is authentic Mid-Century, each wooden part is originally from that chair. No wooden parts got replaced. This chair got examined carefully in the condition before restoration. Then all traces and important indicators were still visible, so it's certain that it's not a fake or a partially authentic object. We guarantee the authenticity and offer it with a certificate of authenticity with an identification number. About us: We are located in Switzerland, the origin of Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier. • Office Cane Chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, PJ-SI-28-A, Chandigarh, 1955
    By Pierre Jeanneret
    Located in Antwerp, BE
Iconic "Office Cane Chairs" created by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Made of solid wood with seat and backrest in braided canework. Tilted backrest and asymmetric flat profiled "compass"-type double side leg assembly, with the legs connected by a crosspiece and supporting the armrests. Slanted, slightly curved backrest, separate from the seat. The seemingly floating back as well as the "compass"-type legs are very typical for this office chair. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. The office chair was part of the furniture from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh. It's a true icon, one of the most famous pieces of all Chandigarh items. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have four office chairs...
