Kentucky chairs by Carlo Scarpa for Bernini, 1977

About the Item

Kentucky is a chair born from the collaboration between Carlo Scarpa and the Bernini company. It exhibits apparent formal simplicity but actually conceals a highly articulated and detail-rich design. With a direct reference to craftsmanship, the Kentucky chair combines the naturalness of its walnut frame with the value of the sartorially crafted leather seat and backrest. The visible stitching on the seat and backrest serves as decorative elements resulting from a sophisticated artisanal assembly and attention to detail, which is characteristic of Carlo Scarpa. The seat is anchored to the frame using individual tensioned elastic straps, construction details aimed at achieving a high level of comfort, which also become strongly decorative. Additionally, the chair features a backward-leaning seat, a design choice made by the designer to meet functional and ergonomic needs. The frame is made of walnut, and the seat and backrest are in solid cognac-colored leather. As original pieces from 1977, the seats display signs of wear consistent with their age and use, accentuating their historical significance. Pieces accompanied by a warranty of authenticity provided by Bernini./ Bibliography: Book Carlo Scarpa, for Bernini, limited edition, pages 56 to 63, Publisher September 1979 Carate Brianza - Carlo Scarpa and Tobia Scarpa, Publisher RG, pages 14, 31, Year 2012 – Ottagono n° 92, page 138, Year 1989. Designer: Carlo Scarpa was an architect, designer, and innovator who lived and created through two world wars without ever ceasing his creative mind. Born in Venice in 1906, Scarpa and his family moved to Vicenza, a city near Venice, when he was just 2 years old, and he spent most of his childhood there. In 1919, following the death of his mother, the family returned to Venice, and young Carlo later enrolled in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. In 1926, he obtained his qualification in Architectural Design and worked in the Venetian studio of the architect Guido Cirilli until 1931, while also apprenticing under architect Francesco Rinaldo. In 1934, Carlo Scarpa married Rinaldo's niece, Nini Lazzari. From 1933 to 1947, he served as an artistic consultant for the famous and prestigious Venini glassmaking company, and some of the most original glass designs in the history of design can be attributed to his personal artistic taste for Murano glass. For over twenty years, extending into the mid-1940s, he received numerous commissions for the design of both public and private buildings. Carlo Scarpa's architecture has been described as "the most cultured and aristocratic of Italian 20th-century architecture," characterized by his unmistakable style, which seamlessly blended a love for materials, meticulous attention to detail, a skillful incorporation of Wrightian and organic poetics. These elements were not only present in his remarkable architectural projects but also in his design of furniture products, which have left their mark on the history of Italian design, thanks to collaborations with significant companies in the industry such as Cassina and Bernini. He enjoyed collaborating and producing unique, handmade pieces, works that were one-of-a-kind and avant-garde, which elevated Italian craftsmanship to an intellectual sphere, thanks to his ingenious and refined technological details and a keen sensitivity for natural materials. It's for this reason that his work and creativity produced timeless masterpieces that are still admired today. Carlo Scarpa passed away in Sendai, Japan, in 1978 as a result of an accident.

Carlo Scarpa "1934" dining chair for Bernini, walnut and reddish brown leather, Italy, 1977, set of six. Initially designed for Scarpa's own Venetian house in 1934, this model came up to production only in 1977. This chair demonstrates his architectural attitude toward furniture design. The sophisticated and right-angled base contrasts with the backrest essentiality, further enriched by its curvaceous shapes. A remarkable detail is an open cut on the back that diverges at the bottom, resulting in an unusual yet genuine form. Although an apparent disharmonic look is created, these details enhance the chair's elegance. We can do custom restoration and special reupholstering.
