Florence Knoll Lounge Chair on Steel Base in Heather Grey Tweed Fabric

About the Item

Vintage original Florence Knoll lounge chair in heather grey tweed fabric. Although unsigned or tagged, this is 100% knoll, and most likely from the 1980's. Purchased from an estate along with matching sofa and Herman Miller Walnut Conference Table. The construction on this hefty chair is truly superb. The rigid frame is over-engineered for rigidity and commercial applications. This sexy sleek low profile sofa would play nicely with virtually any home interior, while being industrial enough to last for decades in a high traffic office. This original fabric still looks great, only some minor imperfections. Look close at the tweed fabric and you will see several woven colors. The overall neutral color is actually comprised of yellow, black and grey. Warmed through color and texture, the Florence Knoll Lounge Chair is a scaled-down translation of the rhythm and proportions of mid-century modern architecture. With a spare, geometric profile—an expression of the rational design approach Florence Knoll learned from her mentor, Mies van der Rohe—the sofa is utterly modern and totally timeless. Professionally steam cleaned and detailed top to bottom. The chrome base shines brilliantly with only a few minor age-appropriate scuffs. Construction and details: - 32.75” wide x 33” deep x 28.5” high (16.75” seat height) - Exposed metal frame and legs in heavy gauge steel with polished chrome finish - Inner frame is solid wood - Seat suspension with No-Sag springs.

    By Florence Knoll, Knoll

Florence Knoll for Knoll International, lounge chair, model '51', teak, fabric, United States, 1955 This slipper chair model 51 is designed by Florence Knoll. The teak frame of the chair is sleek in form. The angled seat is placed upon the squared-off frame. Maximum seating comfort is ensured by the wide seat and tilted backrest. Florence Knoll (1917-) was trained as an architect and had a sense of style from a very young age. In 1936 she met Alvar Aalto and was trained by Marcel Breuer, Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. This meant that although she was barely out of her teens, she was educated by the best of the European modernists. When she arrived in New York Knoll worked on interior projects (being the only female) which is how she came to know Hans Knoll. When Florence joined Knoll, the planning unit started. Florence also made sure that the designs where more 'American Modernist' instead of Scandinavian, When Hans Knoll died she...
