Pierre Paulin Butterfly F675 lounge chair Artifort 1960s, 1st ed., rare patina

About the Item

The "Butterfly" chair, designed in 1963 by the renowned French designer Pierre Paulin, is a showcase of elegant simplicity and comfort. Manufactured by Artifort, a prestigious Dutch company known for its high-quality furniture, this easy chair highlights Paulin's unique design ethos. The chair features a slender, geometric tubular frame that elegantly supports the leather seating and backrest. These leather components are directly attached to the frame, allowing them to comfortably mold to the body’s contours. The original brown leather of the chair has developed a striking light patina that beautifully contrasts with the nickel metal frame, adding a touch of timeless allure. Pierre Paulin (1927-2009) drew significant influence from Scandinavian design and American prefabrication methods, alongside his formal training in sculpting and stone carving. This background helped forge his distinctive style, marked by lush, expressive forms and signature organic curves. Paulin began his illustrious career collaborating with Thonet in 1954 and was later recruited by Kho Liang Le, the head of design at Artifort, in 1958. This partnership was pivotal, as Paulin remarked that it allowed him "the first full expression of my abilities," while he sought to innovate in the then-primitive field of chair manufacture. His career reached heights that included redesigning the private apartments of the Elysée Palace for President Pompidou and furnishing President François Mitterrand’s office. Following his death, Paulin was honored posthumously in November 2009 with the title of ‘Royal Designer for Industry’. For further insight into Pierre Paulin’s work, see "Pierre Paulin Designer" published by Archibooks in 2008, featured on pages 188/189. Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
powerful work “Snake in wonderland” by Ernst Vijlbrief (1938-2010). The expressive brushstrokes are typical for the style of Vijlbrief, connecting him to CoBrA and the expressive action paintings of Karel Appel. This small work is a great example of the early style of Vijlbrief and a highly collectible piece. Signed in top corner and verso signed, dated and titled. Ernst Vijlbrief, born November 25th, 1934, in Utrecht studied at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and at the Academia di Porta Romana in Florence (1956-1959). In 1961 he took part in the large exhibition “Jongere Nederlandse schilders, beeldhouwers en architekten: Liga Nieuw Beelden” in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Next to his work as an artist, Vijlbrief was an engaged board member of several artist associations, like the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Professional Association of Visual Artists). In 1973 he cofounded Bond van Beeldende Kunstarbeiders (BBKA) in Utrecht, with artist Bob Bonies.
