Robert Lewis Set of Four Lounge Chairs Studio Crafted Santa Barbara, CA. 1940s

About the Item

Robert Lewis suite of four lounge chairs hand made in his studio below Old Mission Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California in the 1930s. Three of the four chairs have matching 29.5 inch tall backs and one has a 33.5 inch tall back. All four are welded steel pipe lacquered black with freshly wrapped cotton- poly exterior flagpole cord for wearability. The front to back wrap is based on the shadows of nylon webbing that had been applied to the chairs and gave them two possibilities as chairs. They can have a knife edge pad as a seat and thus a 14" seat height for lounging or add a 3.5" or 4" high seat cushion for use as a standard arm or dining chair. The outrageous rake to the back is more art deco than mid century modern I think but I am not 100% positive of the date of when these were made. Note the lack of a mid back cross bar which allows for this graphic wrap. A wonderful set of chairs. The chairs are in very good condition.
