Late 18th Century Shield Back Hall Chair

About the Item

Fine George III mahogany hall chair, the shield back bear painted heraldic crests commemorating the union of the original owners: one half lions rampant and the other swans. The banner below reads "Donimus providebit." The seat features a circular recess and molded edge on tapering square legs and stretchers. Although the motto "Dominus providebit" is associated with Clan Boyle of Scotland, the two coats of arms pertain to other families. The wife's side, right, is believed to reference the Clarke family of Welton Place (constructed in 1758 and demolished in 1972). The husband's coat of arms are identified as belonging to the Godden family of Leyburn Castle in Kent. There is recorded a marriage of a Thomas Godden (1794-1880) and an Anne Clarke (1800-1874) in about 1831, which may be the couple represented in the chair. The initials H.N.W. are carved on a repair of the seat board, possibly contemporary with the construction of the chair.
