French Carved Back Slipper Chair and Needlepoint Seat from Early 20th Century

About the Item

A French carved back slipper chair with needlepoint seat circa 1920-1930. This elegant French slipper chair features a carved back which recalls the theme of the hunt with motifs of quivers and arrows. The top rail of the back is adorned with a carved lantern while the sides feature reeded posts wrapped by carved ribbons. The needlepoint seat is secured by a brass nailhead trim and rests on four legs, two reeded straight legs in the front and two smooth saber legs in the back. Each of the front legs are decorated by two rosettes on each side where it meets the skirt. The French 1910-1920 period is characterized by a return to aerodynamic forms after the curves of Art Nouveau style. A part of the furniture production of this period is inspired by the neoclassical furniture of the 18th century as seen by the motifs of quivers, arrows and flares. Neoclassicism also symbolizes this return to order in the field of decorative arts. Set in a living room or in a dressing room with an eclectic selection of furniture, this French slipper chair would bring the luxurious side of neoclassicism to the 21st century.
