Chinese Prosperity Drum Stool, c. 1900

About the Item

This early 20th-century ceramic garden stool from China's Zhejiang province keeps with tradition with its simple drum-form shape, cloaked in a dark brown-black glaze. Ringing both the top and bottom is a pattern of boss-head nails that imitate those used to stretch a skin on an actual drum. Eternal coin cutouts perforate the sides, symbols of prosperity and success. Traditionally used as a place to rest one’s feet, a stool like is perfect as a garden seat or a small side table indoors or out.
