"En Pointe" Round Stool with Cane Seat, circa 1900

About the Item

The distinctive, feathery grain of jichimu, or "chicken-wing wood," sets this woven top oval stool apart. Clearly influenced by Western design, this petite Chinese stool was likely crafted for the European export market. Like a ballet dancer frozen midstep, the stool's curved legs end in delicate feet balanced en pointe, creating the effect of being gracefully and perpetually in motion.
