Gio Ponti for Cassina Sculptural Stools in Walnut, Italy, 1950s.

About the Item

Gio Ponti for Cassina Pair of two Sculptural Stools in Walnut, Italy, 1950s. Pair of sculptural stools from the 687 series by Italian designer Gio Ponti in the early 1950s.The structure with angular openwork forms is made of solid varnished walnut. It houses a reupholstered seat in excellent condition, covered with a bleu fabric manufactured by Cassina Italy circa 1953. Gio Ponti was a significant figure in 20th-century Italian architecture and design, known for his buildings, furniture, and achievements as an editor and entrepreneur. He was also a successful product designer, curator, painter, graphic designer, teacher, author, and promoter of Italian industry. A new book from TASCHEN presents 136 of his projects, showcasing his achievements in various fields. The book includes text by Italian writer and designer Stefano Casciani, Ponti's late daughter Lisa Licitra Ponti, grandson Salvatore Licitra, and captions by New York-based architecture and design historian Brian Kish. Kish believes that Ponti's expropriation of historical motifs has a contemporary feel, making him relevant for the twenty-first century.
