Important Antique Earliest Recorded English Windsor Chair by Kerry Evesham 1793
About the Item
An important antique earliest documented Windsor chair by Kerry of Evesham, 1793.
The high comb back chair is made from ash & elm, the spindled back with a shaped top splat, to the center of the chair is a pierced 'keyhole' shape, the chair has a continuous armrest and shaped seat and is raised on legs that are idiosyncratically inverted.
The chair is marked to the underside "Kerry Evesham" and dated "1793" it is also marked to the side of the seat "kerry Evesham, the Kerry family were several generations of Windsor chair makers based in Evesham Worcestershire, please see the entry in "The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840". The earliest dated chair that is currently recorded is 1808 and a similar chair is housed at the Tudor-Jacobean, Temple Newsam House located in Leeds West Yorkshire. This chair is dated 15 years earlier than any other recoded example, condition is very good, stable and robust and will last another 230 years!
