17th Century Cassone Coffer in Oak and Walnut
Located in Penzance, GB
Superb, early 17th century marriage chest in oak , walnut and exotic woods, inlaid with birds and flowers. These exotic veneers include boxwood, bog oak, holly and other indigenous timbers. Once unlocked, the end panel slides up to reveal two secret drawers. Inside the candle box, the front then slides up to reveal three more secret drawers. When we purchased this chest it was locked but we found many interesting documents revealing where it had spent much of its time in London over the past 150 years. These documents will stay with the chest. The period feet are not original but are in keeping with the piece. Although most marriage chests are Italian, the North European Renaissance took up many of the early Italian styles and adopted the marriage chest giving it their own twist with panels decorated with receding parquet floor in the manner of Vermeer's paintings and the Dutch architectural fashion...
