Ettore Sottsass Essetre Shelving Unit for Poltronova, 1970s

About the Item

Rare bookcase designed by Ettore Sottsass form the series Mobili Grigi for Poltronova. While artistic director of Poltronova Sottsass created the Mobili Grigi series, introduced at Eurodomus 3 in Milan in 1970. The Mobili Grigi series included furnishing that Sottsass designed with the intention of reaching people in a destabilising and profound way as he himself states: "In a room you have to put as much grey furniture as possible, at this point the person will feel practically soffocated by a grey, shiny, geological slide of plastic, he will feel completely isolated from everithing outside the room". These are Ettore Sottsass most anti-commercial designs, where the concept of grey symbolized the antithesis of consumer appeal. Gel-coated fiberglass structure with lacquered wood shelves.
