19th Century Buffet D'Entre Deux by Paul Sormani

About the Item

This beautiful hallway buffet crafted by Paul Sormani at his famous Rue Charlot cabinetry shop in Paris boasts a gracefully curved design on its front and sides. It hails from the Napoleon III period, showcasing a rich interplay of three mahogany shades complemented by lemonwood and thuja inlays. Four gilded bronze ornaments, adorned with leaf and flower motifs, embellish the upper pillar, while graceful decorative drops adorn the four feet, culminating in sabots. Each pillar is framed by exquisitely carved strips, and the bronzes exhibit exceptional artistry in both carving and gilding. Finally, it is crowned with a peach blossom marble top featuring a gorge and jumped projection. This buffet bears the signature of the Sormani workshop on its lock. Paul Sormani was born in Venice in 1817. In 1847 he set up a cabinetry shop in Paris. He soon specialized in 18th century furniture copies, notably Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. During the 1855, 1862 and 1867 World Fairs, he was awarded medals and increased his clientele. The empress Eugenie and wife of Napoleon III was among Sormani's top clients. She contributed largely to his company's success as she was known to decorate her palaces with Paul Sormani's creations. In 1867 Paul Sormani moved his workshop to rue Charlot which was highly successful. He died in 1877.
