Early 19th Century Country French Buffet from Normandie

About the Item

Early 19th Century Country French Buffet from Normandie was designed to serve a large home, and provide adequate storage for all china, flatware and glassware belonging to the family, and to do it with classic French flair! Constructed from indigenous old-growth oak, the preferred material of the region, it features a standard configuration with two drawers over two cabinet doors, but with the center stile attached to the left door so that when open, the doors provide unhindered access to the capacious interior. The doors are hung with external brass barrel hinges, complemented by the elaborate brass key guards, which of course complement the drawers' bale pulls above. However, it's the carved embellishment that defines this wonderful keepsake! Egg & dart were sculpted by hand around the drawer facade, with wheat bordering separating the drawers and the upper tier from the lower cabinet tier. Egg & dart was also hand-carved around the intricate contours of the raised panels of the doors, with exuberant wildflower and foliate carvings accentuating the upper portion, all set in a picture-frame like molding around the outer edge. The center stile is carved with an overlapping leaf motif, leading the eye down to the masterpiece of sculpture that appears on the undulating apron below. There we see a classic Romanesque urn flanked by acanthus fronds and more wildflowers and foliates, emanating out to the scrolled legs with escargot feet. Circa 1830s Measures 50H x 55W x 23D.
