18th Century French Provincial Louis XV Confiturier

About the Item

A charming Provincial Louis XV period confiturier with beautifully aged rich patina. Hand-crafted of solid fruitwood, likely cherry-wood case and a thick walnut slab top with front and side serpentine shaped molded edge, over a rectangular solid wooden case with quality pegged joinery, a single key locking large cabinet door adorded with raised panel, ornate escutcheon plate and original iron lock, opening to a spacious interior fitted with later added shelf, flanked by paneled sides, a plank boarded back, over gently curving scalloped apron, rising on shaped bracket feet. circa 1770 As warm and attractive as it is functional, originally used to house confit pots, which were clay vessels for jams and preserves, this versatile piece is the ideal size and proportions for a variety of different uses in today's contemporary interiors, including use as a side cabinet, kitchen pantry cupboard, dining room sideboard server or petite buffet, blanket storage chest, hall console, bedroom commode, large oversized bedside nightstand, media stand or single door credenza, to name just a few. Dimensions: (approx) 39.5" High, 33.5" Wide, 22.5" Deep. Condition: In great shape overall, original, with elegantly aged distressed rustic patina over the whole, with rich antique fruitwood glow, superb grain detail, wear consistent with age and use, not detracting from the beauty, only adding to the antique character, old world charm, and historic depth acquired from over 250 years.     A scarce French Provincial Louis XV (1715-1774) / Louis XVI (1774-1792) Period mixed wood religious oratory (prie-dieu / altar) Hand-crafted in France in the 18th century, with later 19th century elements, likely originating in the south of France / Mediterranean region, featuring pegged solid wooden construction of warm, rich fruitwood, chesnut, oak, and maple. Having a slant-front bureau with tall raised back decorated with three Renaissance Revival style high relief panels, the center depicting religious scene comprising Jesus and winged Saint, the side panels with foliate floral fruit pendant carvings, flanked by classical turned baluster-form columns, surmounted with highly stylized hand carved and turned finials. Over a slant-front with star parquetry, the hinged drop-front opens to reveal a distressed leather writing desk / lectern / pulpit on which the holy books can be laid open and allows to shelter the books, which were considered precious goods at that time. The lower sacristy cabinet has a pair of slide-out supports flanking a paneled cupboard door decorated with a large stepped base Christian cross parquetry inlay, affixed with later decorative forged iron faux escutcheon overtop.
