Black Lacquer and Rosewood Cabinet with Soapstone and Bone Inlay
About the Item
This cabinet makes a dramatic statement in black lacquer with rich rosewood trim and brass pulls. But the whimsical figural bone inlay carvings are what makes this most memorable. The cabinet is roomy inside for storage. But it is the form that captivates with soapstone carving insets in mauve, gray, light blue and off white. This Chinese export piece was made in the early 20th century. These cabinets were made mainly for export purposes to the west although they were also used in China. The rosewood grain and color has a reddish tone. It would be wonderful in an entryway with a glass top added or at an angle in a corner. A lovely piece. This was acquired at an estate sale.
