18th Century, Italian Inlaid Wood Chest of Drawers with Secretaire

About the Item

18th century, Italian inlaid wood chest of drawers with secretaire This chest of drawers with secretaire represents the elegant production of Piedmontese (Turin – north of Italy) cabinet-making during the early eighteenth century. The rood paved chest of drawers is finely inlaid in all its sides with elegant baroque geometric patterns, characterized by curls, volutes and twigs in wooden essences of lighter color, creating plays of dark light that give the furniture great sophistication. The use of the root wood gives a particularly clear color, quite unusual for the time and much appreciated and sought after at present. The chest of drawers has four large drawers, one of which, the higher one, cannot be opened because it conceals a secret compartment that can be opened from the upper tilting door. The front is moved while the side, straight, are joined by rounded pillars of value, also inlaid. The upper part consists of an opening compartment equipped with a small tilting door that, rotating on pins, can be lowered and raised according to the needs. When it is open it provides a comfortable writing table, lined with beautiful stamped and original leather, and reveals a series of six drawers and three open compartments in which to store office materials and small personal items. The commode rests on four feet with a shaped line and inlaid. A shaped and inlaid decorative element is placed below the center. The chest of drawers is enriched by original locks and handles in finely chiselled burnished bronze. This chest of drawers can be easily placed in any room of the house, such as the bedroom, the study, the entrance hall and a lounge, as well as in representative places such as offices. It is suitable to be combined with antique furniture and modern furniture.
