Pair of Late 18th Century Italian Marquetry Commodes
About the Item
A Fine Pair of North Italian Late 18th Century Two Drawer Marquetry Commodes.
These attractive commodes are typical of the elegant pieces produced in northern Italy in the neoclassical period but the decoration is particularly well-conceived and executed. Primarily veneered in walnut, they are enhanced considerably by wide satinwood crossbandings on the top, sides and drawer fronts and the recurring use of a diamond motif with inlaid star to the centre, surrounded by a border of stylised flower heads.
The commodes are broadly rectangular in outline with curving brackets leading to very long tapering toupie form feet. They have acquired an excellent colour and patination.
Pairs of commodes of two drawer form are relatively rare and these lovely pieces are both practical and decorative. One of the nicest pairs of commodes we have ever found.
