Rare And Exceptional George I Oak And Laburnum Chest On Stand C. 1720
About the Item
An extremely fine quality and original early George I chest on stand.
Principally of a rich oak flecked with pale medullary rays and with rare and beautiful laburnum crossbanding to the drawers and double ogee moulding to the waist.
The piece absolutely shouts ‘quality’ and each drawer is further outlined on the principal carcase with laburnum crossbanding to accentuate the highlights in the wood and to give a striking chequerboard effect. The stand original and complete. The drawers with original pine linings. The sides dressed with slender bookmatched veneers of laburnum which has been chosen to create a very beautiful flow of grain up and down each panel.
The deep and well shaped apron again crossbanded in laburnum and a double ogee moulding to the waist. All set on original and substantial cabriole legs with original pegs.
The handles are a few hundred years old and of solid brass in the correct style for the period but are likely to be period replacements, returning the chest on stand to its original appearance.
From a private family estate in Sussex where it has been looked after for many years.
This is a fabulous and extremely rare and early chest on stand of exceptional quality and proportion, completely sound, usable and unique.
Superb, truly beautiful, rare and original. Strongly recommended.
