19th Century French Renaissance Corner Cabinet
About the Item
19th century French Renaissance Corner Cabinet represents the epitome of the revival of the Renaissance style that occurred during the middle of the 1800s. Sculpted from solid oak by very talented cabinetmakers, it features a quarter of a pie shape to the architecture, and nestles comfortably into a corner utilizing what would otherwise be wasted space. The top and base consist of fine molded trim, and are connected by the clockwise and counter-clockwise barley twist columns that serve as framework for the cabinet door. At the top of the columns are plinths with boldly carved rosettes, which flank the curved facade of the drawer, which pivots out from a side hinge. The drawer is lavished with fruit and foliate motifs, including ripening olives., with the fruit at the middle serving as the drawer pull. Below the drawer is the piece de resistance ~ the cabinet door festooned with foliate trim in relief all around the center sculpture, which is set in its own oval frame flanked by rosettes and intaglio foliates. The sculpture both celebrates the bounty of nature and a successful fishing trip, with two fish and a lobster embellished by tools of the fisherman's trade, ribbon, and a stylized shell crown. Door and drawer both open to reveal surprising storage, making this collectible as functional as it is beautiful to behold!
