French 18th Century Louis XVI Period Bureau Plat, by Pierre Garnier
About the Item
A magnificent and very high quality French 18th century Louis XVI period kingwood, Charnwood, ormolu, and brass Bureau Plat, signed by Pierre Garnier. The desk is raised by impressive square tapered legs with elegant ormolu fitted sabots, fitted foliate chandelles set on brass backgrounds, and fine fillets extending upwards. Above each leg are beautiful pierced foliate ormolu mounts centering three drawers at the apron. The two outer drawers display striking pierced urn and eternal flame designed ormolu keyhole escutcheons with Greek Key handles and richly chased swaging berried laurel garlands set on charming and most decorative veneered backgrounds with Fine interlocking charm wood inlays. The central drawer displays a stunning pierced intricately detailed ormolu keyhole escutcheon set on a similar elegant veneered background. The back is decorated in the same manner as the front. Above is a green gold tooled fitted leather writing surface. All original gilt throughout.
