French Louis XVI Secretaire Abattant / Secretary desk, circa 1800

About the Item

The secrétaire à abbatant or fall front desk is nearly identical to the desk 5th President James Monroe brought back from France in 1797. These desks are elegant examples of the popular style during the last decade of the 18th century. The Monroe Doctrine Desk, is known for having been the drawing board for the Monroe Doctrine which set the tone of American foreign policy ever since. This French Louis XVI style secretaire early 19th century. It has the original white marble top, single larger drawer with drop handles. And fine brass molding details throughout the piece. This secretaire has a drop-top that features a rich mahogany color finish and has a green leather writing surface with that was added later on. The interior has two large open shelves, a small compartment in the middle with secret drawer along with six small drawers, the bottom of the secretaire has two framed doors with an interior wooden shelf.
