19th Century, Country French Louis XV Secretary
About the Item
19th Century Country French Louis XV secretary is a classic slant-front design, originally conceived as a compact writing desk that could be placed against the wall with a minimal footprint, but still provide a spacious work surface and storage options to make it ever-so-useful. This example, rendered from fine old-growth oak, is supported by four elegant cabriole legs with the front legs adorned with stylized shell carvings, and all four resting on cloven hoof feet. The legs connect to an undulating apron all all three sides, with the front apron embellished with shell and foliate carvings in the asymmetrical style typical of the Rococo movement. The style really comes into its own on the drawer fronts and drop-down slant-front desk with elaborate shell, floral and foliate motifs in a visually striking pattern enhanced by the Rococo-inspired cast brass drawer pulls. Brass key guards and pulls also accent the drawers and desk surface pull-out supports. The desk opens to reveal six drawers with brass knobs and a sizeable writing surface perfect for laptops or tablets.
