About the Item

This unique Empire / Biedermeier secretary was created in Mainz around 1820 and is veneered in walnut and partly on oak. Curled maple, pear tree and maple were used in the furnishings. It comes from an estate of a villa in Mainz. But also the extraordinary quality, such as blind wood of the drawers oak, finest maple with intasisiert sun inside, drawers behind the doors below, super cross-joint veneer (8 times mirrored) on the front, continuous veneers on the side and on the head, speak for the Mainz provenance. Mainz was a center of high-quality furniture production in Germany in the 18th and early 19th centuries. On the one hand because of his wealthy court officials and on the other hand because of the proximity to the Frankfurt Trade Fair, through which Mainz furniture was already being sold throughout the country. When set up, it has two secret compartments behind the letter trays. Another 3 drawers are hidden behind the doors, as is known from high-quality French secretaries a Battant. This served the purpose of not disturbing the cross-joint image of the front with traverses and drawers when the secretary was closed. The furniture has been completely restored, completely clean inside and newly polished by hand with shellac. It has all the original locks, each with a key. The writing tablet has the original key and has counterweights, making it very stable. 2 of the 3 drawers behind the doors below have been expertly added as they were lost, as were the block feet. Otherwise the secretary is completely original. Dimensions: H: 167 cm W: 105 c, D: 53 cm.

Refinished. Repaired: During the restoration, the bureau was cleaned with alcohol, the drawers were sanded clean, minor defects in the veneer were repaired professionally, the feet were lost and had to be replaced in keeping with the style. The bureau has been re-polished.
