Paolo Buffa pair of chestnut wardrobes manufactured by Valzania, Italy, 1938

About the Item

Pair of chestnut wardrobes with mirrored glass inlays, manufactured by Valzania in the late 1930s, designed by Paolo Buffa. With a clean and elegant form, this pair of two-door chestnut wardrobes from the 1940s represents a transitional style that bridges Art Deco aesthetics with more modern and contemporary lines. Small turned feet support a thoroughly geometric structure. The only decorative elements on the doors are two mirrored glass panels that echo the cabinet's overall volume in a scaled-down format. These bedroom furniture pieces were designed in 1938 by Paolo Buffa for Casa A. in Cunardo, Varese, Italy. Characteristic elements of Buffa's entire body of work are evident in these pieces. Significant emphasis is placed on chestnut wood, chosen for its rich grain, which arabesques harmoniously across the smooth surfaces with its natural texture. Buffa, born in 1903, studied at the Polytechnic University of Milan and collaborated with Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia before establishing his own design studio. Primarily focusing on luxury furniture design, he contributed to the interiors of some of Milan's most beautiful homes. The success of his design lies in a personal alchemy between classical styles and modern demands. The presented furniture bears the enameled brass Valzania label, certifying its origin from a manufacturer dedicated to producing Buffa's original designs. Dimensions: 130 W x 58 D x 182 H cm (each)
