Important & Rare 19th Century Italian Micromosaic, Bronzed & Parcel Gilt Wood Table. An exquisitely designed masterpiece, the romantic & operatically themed base and stunning top completely are original to each other. With stunning micromosaic scenes, framed in Malachite, centred by the Doves of Pliny, with Rosso Antico marble banding and the exquisitely carved base beautifully sculpted in the most sumptuous Italian form, with rouge silk forming the dramatically vibrant backdrop to the frieze. In wonderful ‘’country house’’ condition. Micromosaic scenes in order: Doves of Pliny ( Centre ) Pantheon ( Top ) Temple of Hercules Victor The Colosseum Castel Sant' Angelo, Ponte Sant' Angelo, the Tiber River and a distant view of Saint Peter's Basilica St. Peter’s Basilica Capitoline Hill The Roman Forum Arch of Constantine By the mid 19th Century there were as many as ninety-six mosaicists operating in Rome largely producing small plaques, miniatures and cameos for the tourist trade. The best workshops continued to produce micromosaics on a massive scale but such magnificent and costly examples remained the preserve of the wealthy and powerful. Monumental mosaics were bought as souvenirs by visiting aristocrats, given as diplomatic gifts, commissioned by monarchs and displayed at the Great Exhibitions.
